Lifestyle Matters

It’s been a while since I have posted an article. I’ve neglected my outlet. However, the important thing is that I am committing to making an effort to turn that around. It’s not easy to commit to things. I get it! I understand that when you read a compelling article about improving brain health, you might feel excited about self-improvement ideas in the moment. But how do you go from reading about ideas to actually implementing them into your daily routine? Consider the following.

Thoughts About the New Year

Thoughts About the New Year

Happy 2018! Each new year brings new hope. My hope for 2018 is that a cure will be found for Alzheimer's. Please let this be the year!

What's My Story?

To recap why I developed this website, it is because my mom has Alzheimer's. We had to move her to an assisted living facility shortly after her 70th birthday. It is truly heartbreaking to witness her decline. The stress that I and my family have encountered along the way has motivated me to get information out to people.

June is Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. I urge you to take this opportunity to mention this to someone. Anyone. Who will it be? You're thinking. The wheels are turning. Now imagine that you cannot connect those thoughts in your head. Imagine an existence where your days are filled with looking at the same walls, the same people, but not knowing who they are, where you are, or what has happened to you. Just existing. This is the reality for millions of people living with Alzheimer's today.

I have been a part of the Alzheimer's Association event called The Longest Day. I have also started volunteering for this event with my local Alzheimer's Association Nebraska Chapter. I believe in action. I want to make a difference. I believe that you can make a difference too.

During Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, I will be writing articles about what we can do to keep our brains healthy. I'll talk about all the key points that research has provided to date. Please come back and visit my site to read what I have found for you!

Every 66 Seconds....

Every 66 Seconds....

Here is a fact: every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer's. I used to think Alzheimer's was a disease that only very old people would get. I used to think that Alzheimer's meant that a person was just 'forgetful'. It's bigger than that. Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. There is no cure.

In the past couple of months, I've learned about so-and-so's mom, dad, or relative being diagnosed with Alzheimer's too many times. I feel like I have heard one sad story a week, however I'm sure it has been less than that. But still... ugh! The current statistic is that someone in the United States will develop Alzheimer's disease every 66 seconds. Say what? Yes, it is the shocking truth we face today.

The Best Prevention We Know Today

What do we know today about preventing Alzheimer's? We definitely know from research that diet and exercise play an important role in keeping our brains, and bodies, healthy. I came across an article that appears in a recent Time magazine. I've been checking into the research mentioned in the article and I want to summarize for you what I have found.

Spring Fix for Your Brain

Spring Fix for Your Brain

I love Spring! I can't stop talking about Spring! What does Spring mean to you? I bet you can't help but smile when you think of Spring. Like many people, I love seeing the green pop out. I love to see the Spring flowers start to grow, the smell of the flowering trees and freshly cut grass. The way the sunshine feels on my face and shoulders as I take walks feels amazing. The sound of the birds in the mornings makes me feel lighter and happier.
