Get the Facts
/It can be hard to answer other people's questions about Alzheimer's disease when you are not really sure about the facts yourself. Getting information from trusted sources is important. A rule of thumb when looking for reliable information on the Internet is looking at the domain extension. Internet domain extensions ending in .org are usually nonprofit organizations such as research or advocacy groups, professional groups, and scientific or medical groups. For example, the Alzheimer's Association website is alz.org. Domains that end with .gov are sponsored by a U.S. government agency, such as the National Institutes of Health. The Internet domains that end in .edu are educational institutions such as colleges and universities. The .com extension is the most widely used extension for businesses.
I have had people ask me questions that can sometimes be very personal. One of the questions that I get asked the most is "why don't you want to find out if you have the gene"? My basic answer is that because there is no current cure or prevention for Alzheimer's disease, there is no real point in finding out. The reaction is mixed, with some people agreeing with me, some blank stares, and some people saying they would want to know. I have attached some links to 'the facts' so that you can be armed with all of the correct information.
