Thoughts About the New Year

Happy 2018! Each new year brings new hope. My hope for 2018 is that a cure will be found for Alzheimer's. Please let this be the year!

What's My Story?

To recap why I developed this website, it is because my mom has Alzheimer's. We had to move her to an assisted living facility shortly after her 70th birthday. It is truly heartbreaking to witness her decline. The stress that I and my family have encountered along the way has motivated me to get information out to people.

Where do you turn? What do you do next? How in the world am I going to get through this? I will continue to dedicate my time to researching the latest advances in Alzheimer's and brain health, and bring you the tips and tools that I find helpful.

Where to Start?

No matter the circumstances, it can be terrifying when your doctor verbalizes his or her concern for dementia. I really do understand. One of the most helpful resources that I came across early on is our local Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC). No matter where you are located, your local ADRC is a great place to start. For example, here is the link to finding your local ADRC in Wisconsin

The Latest Treatments

I am frequently asked about the latest drug treatments for Alzheimer's. There are some medications that are used for treating memory loss.  While these drugs will not cure Alzheimer's, they have been effective in temporarily slowing down the symptoms, such as memory loss and confusion. My mom did try a medication in the beginning. In my opinion, I thought she seemed fairly clear for the short time she was on the medication. Unfortunately, another medical issue prevented her from continuing the medication. Here is a link to the current Alzheimer's drug treatments.

It is disappointing to see that yet another drug has failed in clinical trials. But I will not give up hope or allow myself to feel helpless. I have addressed the topic of what we can do to delay the onset of dementia in past blogs, and will continue to curate the latest information out there. Personally, I think that inflammation is a common factor in many diseases and I will be addressing this and other brain health topics in future blogs. Thanks for reading my blog!
