Reducing Your Risk of Alzheimer's and Dementia

Research indicates that it may be possible to delay the symptoms of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease through controlling risk factors that have an impact on brain health. Risk factors identified include a healthy diet, exercise, good sleep, reducing stress, engaging in social activities, and challenging yourself mentally. Personally knowing that my genetics are outside of my control, I want to do whatever else I can to support my happy healthy brain! Here is a helpful link about diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices that we can make now to create and maintain a healthy brain.

Speaking of lifestyle choices, I personally feel strongly about wearing a helmet when I ride a bike to protect my brain. Some studies have suggested that head trauma increases a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease. As my mother was undergoing some tests a few years ago, one question asked of her was ‘did she suffer any head trauma at any point in her life’? This is just another good reason to protect our noggins and wear a helmet!
